2022 Glenkeen Syrah Tasting Note

by Damon O'Brien on Aug 26, 2023

Style: Think Rhone Syrah. Soft & rich with an emphasis on dark berry fruit and integrated smoky oak. It is just silky smooth and eminently drinkable.

Season: The growing season for the 2022 vintage commenced with about average rainfall in spring of 2021, followed by a cooler than average summer. The slower ripening season allowed for excellent physiological ripening leading balanced flavours, acid & fruit tannins.

Source:  Picked from four separate blocks across 5 clones with three different yeast to enhance different aspects of the various clones. 12 months in older French oak adds the final element of complexity.

Vinification: The juice was fermented in five batches, as per when the block/clone was picked. Multiple blending trials were conducted over 12 months prior to settling on the preferred blend of percentages of the 5 clones of Shiraz.

Serve: The wine is so soft it is a perfect combination with a BBQ to roasts – Our favourite so far has been roast lamb with all the trimmings.

Shining Rock Vineyard is tucked into a tight valley just to the south of the small Adelaide Hills village of Nairne. Planted by Brian Croser in the late 1980s the 5 clones of Shiraz speak to the amazing Rhone like terroir.
